Review: The White Queen / SEASON FINALE

whitequeen

The White Queen has ended and I must confess I am extremely sadden by this tragic situation. Is it the best show ever? Probably not, but still it was a great production. I shall always defend the show and any other historical drama that is able to bring my attention to history and the women behind the great historical events. Dr. Philippa Gregory is often criticised for taking many liberties in portraying history in a very particular way, playing with facts and characters, serving the purpose of affirming or denying a hypothesis she has about a particular moment of english history..This criticism is accurate, there is no denying about that. However this criticism is in fact what makes Philippa so great..Her unique portrayal of the War of the Roses, gives an insightful look to some of the most emblematic and mysterious characters of the period: Women. On times ruled by men, women are either part of the setting (an accessory of sorts) or are regarded as mortal enemies fuelled by dark forces. I studied the War of the Roses back in High School and it was somehow exciting to comeback to what I think I knew of those turbulent times…And it was wonderful to make the connection with one of my favourite shows ever: The Tudors. Henry the VIII reign is better understood with this background, understanding  his family’s precarious claim to the throne and the need of a male heir…His hatred for the last members of the Plantagenets and the reason for their later execution. The White Queen has a single most important premise: The road to power is bloody and in order to hold the crown everything is at stake.. In conclusion, this was a great show and I have to say I would rather have a different ending, showing a clearer outlook to the characters life under the new monarch Henry Tudor.  Lets take a look to the final turn of the wheel of fortune, the most drastic turn since the arrival of out beloved Elizabeth Woodvile to Court….

Who got screwed?
Queen Anne
  1175250_638109239540053_330735243_n
Anne had perhaps the most interesting and volatile journey of the characters in the show (from the second irrelevant girl of the Kingmaker to Queen of England). I never really disliked Anne, but her importance in the whole setting of the story was way to forced. Philippa tried to make her important but not in the right way. Despite the fact she was able to climb the maximum stage of the social ladder, her role in the rise of power wasn’t very clear. There are two possible portrayals of Anne. One as victim of her husband’s actions, which has already been seen in the amazing acting of Kristin Scott Thomas in the film version of Richard III. The other possible representation of Anne would be as an active member of her husband’s court, using her influence to fulfil her struggle for power in her favour.. But that was not the case..Queen Anne has been portrayed as mixture of Lady Macbeth and a very passive Catherine of Aragon…Very bitter and very feeble…She could not take Elizabeth down, nor could she send away her hot niece…Anne’s down fall is quite sad. She feels guilty for the disappearance of the princes and then she faces the death of her only son… And so she becomes extremely sick, leading to her death. With no heir or security of her husband’s reign…The end of the Kingmaker’s daughter, the end of influence of the Neville family, a house that once hold  power in England.
King Richard III

From all the characters in the show, this was perhaps the most underwhelming portrayal of the historical, legendary villain of all times: Richard III. But still it was a fairer portrayal of this man. The Tudor historians (mainly Sir Thomas More) and even Shakespeare have stained the history of the Duke of Gloucester, even making him guilty for the mysterious disappearance of the princes in the Tower. Richard III was in this show a pawn of Margaret Beaufort’s efforts to make her son King. Richard’s image is constantly damaged and diminished by several scandals, including his closeness to his niece Princess Elizabeth. This season finale, was all about loss (his son, his queen) and Richard  faced his final battle at Bosworth, where he is betrayed by Lord Stanley. Richard is butchered and left naked in the woods, losing the crown to the last Lancaster claimant.

The House of York

After years of holding to the crown, the internal battles between the sons of York lead to the downfall of their house. Their ambition and  their inability to accept a lesser evil (The Woodvilles) opened  a door for their enemies to  take the throne. The White Rose got lost in time and their male heirs were mostly eradicated …(Richard Elizabeth’s second son is safe and George’s son is still alive).
Who’s fortunes rose?

The Tudors and Margaret Beaufort

1148833_640718469279130_1936255056_n

The new King of England is hardly known for us viewers, we know more of Jasper and of his mother (the annoying lady of the show). And to be very real, the Tudor line is even lower than the one of the Rivers family. And the Beaufort family comes from a bastard Lancastrian line, which were forbidden to ever take the crown. But the point behind this brief introduction also empowers their rode to power. Despite Lady Margaret’s annoying ways of approaching her scenes, this woman had to endure to so many horrible situations to put her son in the Throne. She is a fierce woman, who conspired against the realm and even help to bring the House of York against each other. But the road to power is not honourable, nor is it a path protected by the hand of God…This is for me the most important fact presented by Philippa Gregory and it relies on the great chance that the Tudors and Lady Beaufort were actually responsible for the deaths of the Princes in the Tower.  They had the greater part to win from the demise of the heirs of the throne…And Richard was the perfect target to become the Villain. What I despise of Margaret is that she is unwilling to accept the guilt and the consequences of her ambition. It was not God who won the Crown for the Tudors, it was blood and death… In the end, her strategical alliance with Lord Stanley made her son victorious, becoming the  new King and her the Lady Mother of the King…

The White Princess

Princess Elizabeth the eldest daughter of the White Queen had a very secure position. On one side she had won the affection of her uncle, who was infatuated by her. The sudden death of Anne, lead her close to the Crown. Richard needed her to join the Yorkist efforts.  And on the other side, her marriage had already been arranged to Henry Tudor. So either way she would be Queen. The best scene of Elizabeth is when she confronts Lady Margaret and tells her that she is not taking her crap.. It was a very well taken character…A little bit to much of potential incest..But still it was enjoyable. In conclusion the White Princes left us all wanting for more…How would her marriage be? How would be her relationship with her mother in law?

Where does Elizabeth stand in this final turning point of the  Wheel of Fortune?

_69260854_4477960-high_res-the-white-queen

Elizabeth was the main character of the story, but her final episodes took  focus out of her.  My problem with this season finale is that it doesn’t  feel like closure for our main character Elizabeth Woodville. ..She has lost and gained so much during the War of the Roses…But what must be remembered, is that she is a survivor. She outlived her adversaries and was able to mix her family with the english nobility.  A witch or not..Elizabeth changed the history of the Realm and her legacy goes beyond many of the coming Queens and Kings of both England and Scotland.

Review: Season 6 / FINALE / True Blood

TB6_Poster_3.indd

Sunday was indeed a very busy day for TV viewers, we had to mayor season finales and new episodes from Breaking Bad and The Newsroom. True Blood has said good bye already announcing its return for next summer.  I want to begin by stating that this season improved so much from the last two seasons. In a weird way this season has re-staged the main struggle of the people of Bon Temps and it showed us all of the very delicate and fragile nature of the story. There were some emotional moments, but really the death of Terry was not that important…The producers of the show intended to make it more relevant of what it actually was.. Still there were many beautiful touching moments at the funeral… So lets take a look at the season finale of True Blood..

The end of the Camp    529119_10151759190168563_2139071664_n

Since the last episode, we saw the demise of the camp. Every human being except for Sarah Newlin (Anna Camp) were slaughtered.  The camp was destroyed, but still many of the contaminated blood was transferred. At the beginning of the episode Eric says goodbye to Pam, flying into the skies. A heart shattering scene for Pam who even at the great exhilarating joy of looking at the sun, felt the agony of loosing Eric again..The vampires head to Bills Mansion…Pam later says goodbye to Tara..She needs to look for Eric.

Warlow and Sookie

1098407_647283575284759_1124016954_n

Sookie leaves the funeral alongside a too hairy Alcide. She is wondering about Jason because he was not present at Terry’s funeral. However, Alcide smells something weird: Some day-walking vampires. She follows the herd of vampires and soon finds Jason being bitten by a female vampire called Violet. The rising new top bitch in True Blood! So she feels relieved that her vampire friends are saved. So she returns to see Warlow hoping to “date” before turning into a hybrid of fairy and vampire. But the once chivalrous and sweet sexy Warlow, turned against Sookie. And instead he forced her into their new “marriage”. He is no longer willing to wait for her any longer…he wants his part of the bargain…he wants Sookie at all cost!

Bill

true-blood-life-matters-bill-jessica

Is no longer divine. He lost all of his powers and now he enjoy nothing more than himself. Somehow it seem he misses the power and greatness. And as he settles back again into his old way of being. He notices he has harmed Sookie and that he sentenced her to an eternity with Warlow. In his eyes the glow of his former love for Sookie reemerges and the pain and agony returns. Jessica is by his side and she recognises the old Bill, who is worried for Sookie. And here comes one of the best lines of the Season Finale, if not the best one (BTW this was a season of great lines, mostly delivered by the great Pam). Jessica reminded Bill, that her mission as his progeny was to protect his humanity and that he must fight for Sookie, not only out of love, but out of his own sake. He needs to be Bill back again. Too much time he has spent in the dark side of power and cruelty…And so ladies and gentlemen we have Bill back..So he gets Jason and tells him of the dangerous situation of Sookie. Both of them leave to find Sheriff Bellfleur’s daughter in order to find the fairy place in the graveyard… Jason is followed by his badass new kind of girlfriend…Its weird some how, it all began like a captor-prisoner relationship and has developed into a serious monogamous relation…

Warlow’s last Stand

751732_TBjj610_6_20_1541

Sheriff Bellfleur is not very happy of  seeing Bill and he wants to protect his daughter  (who has been constantly used by vampires). But in the end, he accepts to aid Sookie. So they finally get into the fairy side of the Graveyard. They succeed in saving Sookie and Bill struggles to fight Warlow. But Warlow is more powerful, kicking his ass repeatedly. However Jason is able to Sookie home were she is been taken care for.. But Warlow returns and he passes easily the obstacles set up by Jason and Sheriff Bellfleur.  He looks for Sookie in the bathroom and just as he is close to closing what he started, Sookie’s grandpa returns and he holds Warlow, while Jason enters the room to put a stake in his heart. The great Warlow dies..Bringing Sookie some peace. But for the other vampires who once had tasted his blood, his death brought the end to their tanning days..the effect was lost. And once again vampires returned to the shadows.. And then it came a scene…which I have been waiting since the beginning of True Blood: Eric goes in full frontal.. He was taking the sun in a snowy mountain (naked)…and there he receives the bad news of Warlow’s death…So his whole body gets into flames, not before sharing his most precious good. There has been debate on the size of it….But hey we have seen him using it with Sookie, so for the haters: Is not about the size its about the use 🙂

true-blood-1

Six months later

So after this events, there is a hiatus. And we return to Bon Temps  Six Months later. What happened to the vampires? How is Sookie?  What happened to the infected vampires and Hepatitis V?

Bill

972162_647283205284796_978232206_n

Six months later Bill is back on TV. He is the author of a new book that talks about the terrible events of the Camp. He makes emphasis on the terrible legacy of Governor Burrell and the catastrophic damage to the vampire population. The interviewer seems to support Bill’s cause by rejecting the use of a manufactured disease that may destroy a complete population…

Sookie and …… Alcide?

true-blood-finale-sookie-and-alcide

Looking at Bill in the TV is Sookie, who stares at Bill with some of the old feelings she once had for him. But she is not alone. A hot beautiful shaved Alcide steps in, taking Sookie to “have dinner”. We hope to see more of that next season. Definitely Sookie despite the fact her life, family and friends are always at risk during the show, she has has “dinner” with the most handsome and hot supernatural character ever (Bill, Eric, Warlow and Alcide). Good Lord ! This girl knows how to party! Damn her…

Violet and Jason

tb-jason-vioilet

Jason is found going under Violet.. An after he finishes, he demands that he wants to have “dinner” and not only an entree (which only she is enjoying). But still she disagrees… This my friends could be sexual exploitation..Jason is tired.. But God knows how much we hate Violet…Jason is the sexual fantasy of any female or gay fan of True Blood.

Bon Temps new Mayor

526491_647283528618097_2097535518_n

The next scene shows the coming together of two congregations: one is traditionally of white people and the other one of black people. The reverend (BTW the husband of Tara’s recovered alcoholic mother) integrates the room, making all of them seating in other places. The true spirit of coming together of uniting. The reverend announces the increasing thread of sick hepatitis V Vampires, coming to Bon Temps to destroy them all. So he then introduces the mayor, the one and only Sam Merlotte. One of Sookie’s old admirers , who actually is expecting a baby…So Sam talks about a new alternative to this rising risk…He proposes that each human should enter into a monogamous relationship with a vampire, where the vampire could feed from he or she, in exchange of protection of this new thread. Most people seem to be against! So Sam announces that they should all go to a party at Arlene’s new restaurant, where they could meet the vampires and arrange how to manage their new relations….

Jessica and Sheriff Bellfleur

true-blood-season-6-finale-promo-radioactive_450x252

Jessica is at Arlene’s fest and she is looking for someone. Its not her hot rocker boyfriend who is singing with the band. She is looking for Sheriff Bellfleur. He visits him and despite his anger, she declares to protect the Sheriff and his daughter against all foes…Even if doesn’t want to…

The Cliffhanger of the Season

Sookie and Alcide attend Arlene’s fest but they leave quickLy. They encounter Bill who brings a very uncomfortable situation for the three of them. Bill wants to talk to Sookie, but she does not want to…Alcide is being territorial..But all of a sudden a herd of sick hepatitis V Vampires arrive heading towards the fest…and that is how this season ended..

a_560x375-2

From all the vampire stories in television, this is one of my favourite. The darkness of its humour and the deep tragedy of its characters makes it fun to watch. This season returned the focus on the main issues behind the relationship between supernatural creatures and humanity…It was a season of lots of departures…. Nora… Terry….Steven Newlin..But also it was the return of Bon Temps. For me that was the whole point behind the death of Terry..to show how the people of the town matters and how the faith of all depends on their unity…This was an easier season to deal with..There was no Vampire religion or Witches…it was more basic and it was quite raw… True Blood has once more re-established it self as one of the best shows of the summer and a story that is still relevant for its viewers..The Hepatitis V has become the new danger behind our characters. And next season will surely bring more surprises…

For now…lets take a close look to Dracula, a show that is coming soon, starring the hot Jonathan Rhys Meyer….Its not HBO, but still lets give this show a chance…At least does not look, corny as Vampire Diaries (Which by the way is quite bad).

Youth and Lust: The ever going guilty pressure..

Nicolas-Regnier-Saint-SebastianX560

There is no huge difference between 20 and 18, when you simply look at the  numerical difference. However when it comes down to an affair…it actually matters. Yes world,  I started an affair with a  freshman (he  just graduated from high school).  It feels liberating to scream it out to the world! Because nothing is easy when dealing with someone who has just arrived to University. I usually laughed and criticised my female friends for dating younger men. But the wheel of fortune shifted so critically insane, bringing a joyful, lovely, beautiful, teen-ish chaos..What is it? that makes us fools for the young and beautiful? Why are we infatuated so passionately for these hot, cute and still confused men? I will now dedicate to first characterise the man of the affair and what he represents..And then I’ll analyse how lust is unavoidable when the young suddenly appear and the dangerous road ahead.

I would like to begin by stating that I am not an old person…and when I refer to this young man, I do it thinking of a teen-adult ready to take the world. Full of hope and fitness, but  among all of their many qualities, they have a driving force of nature that makes them very interesting. In my case there is also a huge empathy for him and his huge intellect (he has other huge talents).

The fun thing about this young men is that they like intrigue and sexual tension building up. For them its like fuel…. In my case, my young man is a player of words and conversations. He raises the level of my blood and as soon as things are starting to heat up, he stands back always leaving wanting more..A Machiavellian in his own right and a true master of flirting… When we are physically near….its hard not to kiss him and hug him..

Youth is a mirror of what we all were and how we felt back then. I never noticed a younger man as someone I’d like to be with…But now I can’t get enough..

The beginning of this affair has proved me wrong about so many things. And I am scared..I am starting to feel some attachment. A feeling that risks it all..Because the great issue with this affair is that on one side, he doesn’t know what he wants and on the other side, I am moving towards a more serious thing…So our interests are different.. Making things uncomfortable and weird…When I was like him, all I wanted was to play and have a good time! I was very lost at that time, fearing my own feelings and desires.

Lust and Youth are two concepts that are exclusive of each other. And they have shaped so far the interactions of this new affair…..Recently we finally kissed and fooled around.  Just look at this scene:  a cold forest +  night + the danger of being seen at any time.  Could this be anymore exciting? I don’t think so and that is precisely what he has brought to me: Excitement and passion..

But there is a down side in all of this. There is a rising risk of the wheel of fortune turning again. And this time to love (I cant believe I just said it). Unfortunately I am not as cynical and cold hearted as I wished. And this guy makes me even more vulnerable. They are as charming and ruthless as summer goes out into winter (or is it fall?).  I would love to simply think of this as something physical and temporal.. But I can’t…I am profoundly infatuated. And that is the problem with such young delightful men..They infatuate us to later dump us..And that is how this game is played.. I knew it, but still I went for it..

What will happen later?? How  will this end? I don’t know..But there is something certain about this young lusty men, with them everything ends  passionately.

A great song..and an even greater version….

The Viper is back and I know its been a long time since the last post…But law school is hard!! I’ll have some special posts dedicated to True Blood and The White Queen…which are leaving us… way too soon….

But don’t worry new seasons are coming up!!

Meanwhile..I want to share with you this exquisite version of one of my favourite songs of one of my favourite movies ever: Moulin Rouge….

Le Tango de Roxanne ..sang by two hot stallions (one being the incredible and incomparable Ricky Martin)
